A Story of a Family Business
Richard came from a small 3-bay automotive shop, working for his dad, who had 2 sons working in the business. Richard was the “brains” of the business, while his brother was hands-on. Like most family businesses, Dad made the boys sweep floors and perform basic oil changes in their early teens. As time passed, responsibilities increased for each brother. One brother was focused on work under the hood, while the other brother was focused on improving the business so that everyone could benefit. Even as such, Richard obtained many years of practical experience on the floor as an apprentice, taking formal training to obtain his journeyman’s certificate to become a licensed AST (Automotive Service Technician) in 1996. Richard continued through the years working on vehicles and service advising, finally moving on to a service advisor “only” position for the business. At this point, it became clear that the shop needed management training, which no one in the family had ever done. Taking college and university courses, Richard continued training; business management and accounting courses were the key. Taking a combination of both college and aftermarket courses set Richard on the path of becoming the general manager of the company. Not having both brothers aligned with training created new internal struggles. How could 4 shareholders run the company? With too many people at the top, everyone thought the best decision was to grow the business. At the time, the family business was a 3-bay automotive repair shop with no systems or procedures but had a “basic” understanding of what needed to improve. Not only was this a challenge, but was also a challenge was how mom and dad were to succeed the business to the boys, trying to be fair. Unfortunately, fair was not what the business needed. It desperately needed leadership, which is what everyone was struggling with. He transformed it into a 12-bay state-of-the-art facility in 2012 with its own management and technical training center. During this time, Richard was already travelling across the country, training other shop owners in performance groups with NAPA Proshop.
As the family business grew, partners were bought out in 2017. Richard left the company to pursue his coaching endeavours full-time, which included training and selling shop software with Protractor, AutoServe1, and Mitchell ProDemand.
Richard has a true passion for helping the independent automotive shops of North America achieve success quickly. Although Richard teaches leadership, Process, Training, and Accountability at a higher level, he spends most of his time teaching and implementing new systems that drastically improve the way you see your business.
Today, Richard employs additional coaches who are trained and able to help your shop get to that next level.
